OhioLINK NEW LOOK AND NEW SERVICES
The new website, indexes OhioLINK resources in a variety of ways, and allows individual customization (see My Express Links ).  This site works best with Internet Explorer rather than Netscape.  Also the Electronic Journal Center (EJC) now has enhanced subject lists , including six new choices under Engineering.

EXPANDED ONLINE COVERAGE
OhioLINK is picking up the expanded American Institute of Physics (AIP) access to seven titles (Applied Physics Letters, Journal of Applied Physics, Journal of Chemical Physics,  Journal of Mathematical Physics, Physics of Fluids, Physics of Plasmas and Review of Scientific Instruments). 1991-1996 is available now from the website  for most of these titles.  The rest will be available later this year; 1985-1990 will come in 2002, and back to 1975 in 2003.

J-STOR EXPANDING
At U.C. we now have online access to the fulltext journals in the latest J-STOR segment, the Arts & Science II Collection.  Business will be the next collection added.  A list of  ALL presently available J-STOR links is available on the J-STOR website.

TRANSTECH
The online publications listed on this site have been linked in UCLID.  They focus on Materials Science and Engineering, and cover proceedings (also partially published in paper form), as well as research papers, letters and pre-publication notices (which are only published electronically).

SCIENCE ONLINE
We now have access to Science (magazine) Online and a link has been added to the UCLID record.  The direct URL is:

GOODBYE
This will be my last Newsletter.  I am taking early retirement as of today, the last day of the 1998-2001 AAUP Contract.  I have certainly enjoyed being a librarian at U.C., and working in the Engineering Library, thanks in large part to many of you!  I was delighted to see many of you at the party yesterday and to hear from many more.  I thank you for your generosity, the
opportunities you gave me and the wonderful memories I will take with me!  -Lucy

July 2001
CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION TOURS
On July 14 several groups of visitors toured the Engineering Library in Baldwin Hall.  The conservators (shown here in May ) were at work on the mural, and Dorothy Byers explained to one and all just how fine the new library will be when we move back in next December!

INTERNET EXPLORER
Public workstations in UC libraries are being shifted to Windows 2000 and the Internet Explorer (IE) browser.  You will need to enter your social security number OR your new UC ID number to gain access to the Web.  (Your UC ID number is no longer your social security number! It is the number under your picture on your new UC ID card.

UC LIBRARIES REMOTE AUTHENTICATION
If you are NOT coming from a UC.EDU workstation, remote authentication is now available for U.C. Library  resources.t

IEEE JOURNALS ONLINE
We have sent to storage all the IEEE bound journals volumes that are available online.  You will need to access this information from the online site  until we get all the UCLID links updated.

UNCOVER IS NOW CALLED INGENTA
As I mentioned earlier, UnCover has been bought out by Ingenta . Your REVEAL  searches should still work.  Go to the site and logon.  You should see the searches you have set up, and you can modify them if you wish.

BIO ONE RESEARCH JOURNALS ONLINE
The BioOne collection of biological, ecological and environmental science journals is now available online from OhioLINK. These title will be added to the Electronic Journal Center and  to UCLID.  In the meantime you can access them from the BioOne site  .

June 2001

MORE BOOKS AVAILABLE ONLINE
OhioLINK is expanding the titles that are available online from NetLibrary.  There are currently about 17,000; you may start to come across more of them in UCLID.  You can browse a title online, or download it to your machine for a week using the NetLibrary eBook reader.  This is downladable PC software that allows you to highlight the text or make notes in it.  Let us know is you need any help using this format.

ONLINE JOURNALS LISTED BY SUBJECT
The journals available from OhioLINK's Electronic Journal Center (EJC) are now listed by subject .  Note that you can also search the EJC by author, or by keyword in the titles and abstracts.

ONLINE AND PAPER ACCESS
One of the issues the Engineering Library staff is considering as we anticipate the move BACK INTO BALDWIN is the question of multiple formats.  We have already decided not to keep paper copies of back issues of journals when those issues are available online on your desktop, but what about the current issues?  Should we continue to get paper copies of the current issues?  Do you need to be able to browse through the paper copies rather than looking at them online?  (Often the online copy is available sooner than the paper copy, although we do still experience some delivery problems.)  Is the money better spent for journals we don't get at all?  Is the space better used for material, for example, books, that would otherwise be in storage?  Send an email to mailto:dorothy.byers@uc.edu  and let us know what you think!

May 2001

ACCESS TO THE FULL IEEE ENGINEERING LIBRARY (IEL)
We have found the funds to pay for the complete IEEE/IEE Xplore Library; and it is working, thanks in part to the ECECS Department!  This includes over 100 IEEE journals from 1988 to the present, about 400 IEEE conferences and the IEEE standards.  You may want to use this URL (http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/lpdocs/epic03/), for a while, until we can get all the links into UCLID.

TRANS TECH PUBLICATIONS AVAILABLE ELECTRONICALLY - FREE UNTIL 2002
The Trans Tech publications in the area of Materials Science and Engineering cover proceedings as well as research papers, letters and pre-publication notices.

JOURNALS MOVED TO STORAGE
We have recently moved ALL 1980-1984 bound journal volumes to storage.  If you need access to these volumes fill out a storage request form.  We will email  you within two days with the URL; and you can access the article you need from your desktop.  Please let me know if you want help with this.

You should be sure to check UCLID whenever you need a journal.  If we have the title, UCLID will indicate which years are available online and which years are in paper. For bound volumes, we are no longer duplicating formats.  If certain years of a journal are available online, we are sending the paper volumes for those years to storage.  In addition, for the ACM and the IEEE titles we are getting the current issues ONLY online as well.

UNCOVER/REVEAL ACCOUNTS
UnCover was recently purchased by ingenta, Inc. and the UnCover site is undergoing changes this week. I believe the new URL is http://www.ingenta.com/ .  Existing REVEAL accounts should be moved over to the new site without any action required on the part of users, but there may be some temporary disruption of service.

PHOTOGRAPHS OF EARLY AVIATION
I thought you might be interested in these.  Go to the History Database in the OhioLINK Digital Media Center  and browse to see digitized photos from the Wright Brothers archive held at Wright State University.

LIBRARY NEWS
Last week the server for the Engineering Library website crashed.  It took longer than we thought it would to get it up again, which meant electronic reserves could not be added for several days.  All is fine now thanks to Jack Krebs and Chris Geib!  We apologize for the inconvenience.

The Engineering Library will not have a booksale this year!  But we will start again next year.

Be sure to check our update site for a progress report on the Baldwin renovation and new pictures!  We want to thank you for your patience during all of this year.  We are still expecting to be BACK IN BALDWIN by next Winter Quarter.

April 2001

NEW PHOTOGRAPHS AND HISTORY SITE
Here are Dorothy's latestshots of the progress being made in the Baldwin Hall renovation.  Also, we have recently linked a History of the Engineering Library  to our website.  It is part of the College of Engineering Centennial Celebration  and of the college history.

ACM DIGITAL LIBRARY ACCESS WILL EXPAND
Access to the ACM Digital Library (search for it by title in UCLID) is now coming through OhioLINK who tell us that "in the last quarter of 2001 ACM will begin adding the 2001 issues of the SIG newsletters and then proceed to add archive years as well thereafter."

SCIFINDER SCHOLAR (CHEMICAL ABSTRACTS)
The University of Cincinnati has recently purchased one 24-hour license to SciFinder Scholar for use by U.C. students and faculty.  Previously this database was only available after 5 p.m. Copies of the SciFinder Scholar software is available from John Tebo . Also, SciFinder Scholar plans to deliver access to the Chemical Abstracts compendium back to the beginning of CA in 1907.  The first segment, covering bibliographic and abstract information for research published in journals and patents from 1947-1966,  was added on April 22.  Remaining material back to 1907 will be added over the coming months.

March 2001

NEW LIBRARY
Check out Dorothy's March pictures of the progress in Baldwin Hall!

MORE JOURNALS ONLINE
OhioLINK has added 183 titles from Blackwell Science  and 21 title from Thieme which may be of interest to you.
For the moment you can access them from these lists or by title through OhioLINK.  Shortly, they will be linked
by title in UCLID.  FYI:  Ohio State downloads 20-25% of the articles downloaded in the state.  U.C. and Case Western each download 10-12%.

REMOTE AUTHENTICATION EXPANDED
Remote access in now possible to journals from the American Institute of Physics and the American Chemical Society.  HOWEVER, for the remote authentication to work you must link to the journal by searching for it by title in OhioLINK, not by searching for it in UCLID.

REDESIGN OF OHIOLINK'S HOMEPAGE
A prototype of the new OhioLINK page is available for your comments, although not everything is in place yet. The
page should work on all browsers, but it has additional functionality on IE 5 or Netscape 6.  Let me know what you think, especially, what you think is missing or is hard to get to!

February 2001

WE HAVE LOST ACCESS TO IT-KNOWLEDGE
The ITKnowledge sites were shut down permanently on February 28, 2001, because the company has gone out of this business.  OhioLINK is looking at other options in this area, but so far have not announced any.

IEEE ONLINE
Recently we have had problems accessing IEEE/IEE online, but as of last week everything is up that is supposed to be up. You should be able to access the journals for 1998-date, by title (including the Proceedings of the IEEE), through UCLID or from IEEE/Explorer.  We are working to find funding to purchase online access to additional IEEE/IEE resources (conferences, standards and journals back to 1988).  I'll keep you posted.

J-STOR ECOLOGY & BOTANY
It looks like we will be getting access to this collection.  Many thanks to those of you who sent letters of support.  I expect the links to be in place by April.

ACCESS SCIENCE NEWSLETTER
I have attached a copy of the new AccessScience newsletter.  You can subscribe if you are interested.  Just follow their instructions, and replace whatever name and email you find with your own.

January 2001

LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
Check out the latest photos taken with our new digital camera!

ELECTRONIC THESES AND DISSERTATIONS AVAILABLE FOR OHIO
The OhioLINK Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) site  is now available. The ETD is a free online database of Ohio's masters and doctoral theses and dissertations from participating OhioLINK member schools. (So far there are four.) It contains abstracts for all submitted theses and dissertations; it also includes fulltext of the theses and dissertations, if this was submitted.

MORE ONLINE JOURNALS
Thanks to some help from the College of Business we now have university-wide fulltext access to ten journals that you might be interested in.  They are  published by INFORMS, the Institute for Operations Research and the Management  Sciences.  The links are being added to UCLID; but for now, with a U.C. IP address, you can get to them at http://pubsonline.informs.org/library
